World Cup Qualifiers Second round, Game 2 – Sweden lead series 1-0
When: Monday at 2:45 p.m. ET
San Siro, Milan

Italy’s World Cup life is on the line when it hosts Sweden on Sunday at the San Siro for their playoff second leg. The Swedish won the first leg 1-0 on Friday and could be on the verge of eliminating one of the most successful nations in cup history, as Italy has been to every World Cup since 1962.

Italy are at serious risk of failing to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in six decades after losing 1-0 to Sweden in the first leg of their play-off tie on Friday night.

It is the creative midfield role that will be coach Gian Piero Ventura’s biggest headache as he ponders what changes to make for the second leg in Milan on Monday evening.

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti is suspended after picking up a second booking in Solna. Jorginho has been in excellent form for Napoli this season and seems the most natural replacement, but has never played for Italy before.
Italy’s coach Gian Piero Ventura is under huge pressure to get the Azzurri to Russia 2018
However, the only other option is Roberto Gagliardini and the Inter Milan midfielder lacks the attacking skills Italy require this time.
Italy were too predictable and slow to punish Sweden’s well-organised defence on Friday and although Ventura shelved his unpopular 4-2-4 formation, the 3-5-2 system didn’t work either.
The players appear perfectly suited to a 4-3-3 system used by Napoli and Roma, who are playing the best football in Italy at the moment.
Highlights of the World Cup play-off first leg between Sweden and Italy
Ventura will have better options up front for the return match. Simone Zaza should be back from the knee injury which kept him out of Friday’s match, while Andrea Belotti – who has only just returned from injury – will also be in better shape.
Manchester United full-back Matteo Darmian was the Azzurri’s standout performer on Friday and should start again at San Siro.
